The Workload Placement Module
Workload Placement (formerly Migrate) is one of the modules in the Virtana SaaS platform for migrating and optimizing hybrid and multi-cloud environments. The Workload Placement module in Virtana Platform helps you identify and group related components and workloads for migration to an Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) offering by public cloud service providers (CSP) or to infrastructure offered by vendors (e.g. Nutanix, Dell, VMware, Azure Stack) in private clouds.
What Workload Placement does
The Workload Placement module de-risks and accelerates application or workload migrations for public or private clouds. Workload Placement provides information about your applications and workloads that make the transition to the cloud more efficient and effective.
This is accomplished by providing two main final actionable outputs:
Application or custom workload dependencies and/or move groups
Cost Analysis for public cloud pricing
The dependencies output can be used for either public or private cloud migrations. In the private cloud migrations, the output is used for mapping the applications or custom workloads to hyper-converged nodes. Currently, cloud modeling is offered for the main hyperscalers such as AWS, Azure and GCP and also for other public clouds such as IBM and Oracle.
The Cost Analysis report is used after your applications and move groups have all been created and finalized. The report provides an overview of the relative costs of moving your data to various Cloud Service Providers (CSPs).
Advantages of Workload Placement
The output provided by Workload Placement helps to successfully plan a migration. Assets, such as VMs, hosts, etc., and workloads that are identified by are captured in an archive file provided by Virtana Services. The archive file is uploaded to Workload Placement, which inventories those assets and then calculates the dependencies between all the assets.
Workload Placement helps answer questions such as: What should move to the public cloud? What should stay on-premises? What must be moved together?
Using the output, you can confirm migration approach and scope, measure and modify workload dependencies, analyze migration scenarios, and group various assets to be moved together.
The Cost Analysis report allows you to determine the best CSP for your specific environment, to provide you with the most financially efficient and technically effective cloud migration.
